Fallis wins Leacock Medal for Humour for second time
Orillia, ON — He won it in 2008 and was shortlisted in 2011 and 2013. After making the cut again in 2015, Terry Fallis can add a second Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour to his resumé.
The Stephen Leacock Associates today announced Fallis as the winner of the medal, which comes with a $15,000 cash prize, courtesy of TD Bank Financial Group. The medal will be presented at a gala dinner in June. Runners-up receive $1,500 each.
The book that won over the judges this time is No Relation, Fallis’s fourth novel, earning the Toronto author Canada’s only national literary award for humour writing.
The announcement was made during a luncheon today at the Best Western Mariposa Inn in Orillia.
Runners-up are Aaron Bushkowsky’s Curtains for Roy, Alan Doyle’s Where I Belong, Zarqa Nawaz’s Laughing All the Way to the Mosque and Robert Wringham’s A Loose Egg.
The Leacock Medal for Humour has been awarded since 1947 to honour the dean of Canadian humourists and to perpetuate comedic writing in Canada. Some of our finest writers — Pierre Berton, W.O. Mitchell, Mordecai Richler and Robertson Davies — have been recipients of the award in the past.
