2015 winner to be announced April 30
The winner of the Leacock Medal for Humour and the $15,000 TD Financial Group prize will be announced April 30 at a luncheon celebrating the top five authors as determined by an independent judging panel. It will be held in Orillia, Ontario, at the Best Western Mariposa Inn, Hermitage Room, from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Tickets sell fast for this humour-filled event, popular with Stephen Leacock fans, enthusiastic readers of Canadian literary humour and others connected to the publishing industry.
Tickets are $26 for members, $30 for non-members, and are available from Donnajean Jefferies at 705-325-1757 or email leacocklunch@gmail.com.
The luncheon will be attended by the shortlisted authors — Aaron Bushkowsky (Curtains for Roy), Alan Doyle (Where I Belong), Terry Fallis (No Relation), Zarqa Nawaz (Laughing All the Way to the Mosque), Robert Wringham (A Loose Egg) — or their representatives, as well as local dignitaries.

We are lucky
to have Wendy Fletcher a Master Gardner coming to the Fleming Library to
conduct two seminars.
The first
one is on Monday May 4, at 6:30pm. The topic is Community Gardening. In Lincoln
we have one community garden in Vineland. The Niagara West Adult Learning
Centre is hoping to create a garden in Beamsville. Wendy is an expert on Community
Gardens and will be discussing how to create a garden, community involvement
and more. So if you are interested in Community Gardens please sign up today!
The second
seminar is on Thursday May 7 at 6:30pm. It is Wendy’s popular Container
Gardening series. In the past Wendy has shown us how to create flower and herb
containers. In the fall, she gave us great ideas on how to continue the theme with
ideas for fall right through until Christmas.
This year,
she will be showing us how to create a vegetable container garden. Don’t miss

Past Canada Reads-winning author Terry Fallis and Little Mosque on the Prairie creator Zarqa Nawaz are among the contenders for this year's Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour.
Fallis, who won the prize in 2008 for The Best Laid Plans, made the shortlist for his fourth novel, No Relation, while Nawaz is vying for the award for her memoir Laughing All The Way To The Mosque.
The other writers who made the shortlist, which was announced Wednesday, include Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle for his memoir Where I Belong, Aaron Bushkowsky for his theatre-inspired novel Curtains For Roy, and Robert Wringham for his essay collection A Loose Egg.
The winner of the $15,000 annual prize, which is presented to the author of the "best book of humour written in the previous year by a Canadian," will be revealed at a luncheon on April 30.
Ru
In vignettes that shift back and forth between past and present, Ru tells the story of a young woman forced to leave her Saigon home during the Vietnam War. In spare, luminous prose, Kim Thúy traces the woman's journey from childhood in an affluent Saigon neighbourhood to youth in a crowded Malaysian refugee camp and then to Quebec, where she struggles to fit in -- all aspects of the author's own life story.
In 2012, Ru was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Man Asian Literary Prize. It won the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction in 2010, and the Prix du Grand Public Salon du livre de Montréal.
Cameron Bailey is the Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival. Previously, he was a Festival programmer for eleven years. Toronto Life has named him one of Toronto's 50 Most Influential People three years in a row. For many years, Bailey was a writer and broadcaster on film.
Kim Thúy left Vietnam as a boat person when she was ten years old. She has worked as a seamstress, an interpreter, a lawyer, a restaurant owner and chef. Her first novel, Ru, has been published in twenty countries. Her most recent novel is Mãn. Thúy lives in Montreal, where she devotes herself to writing.
Sheila Fischman is one of Canada's most celebrated translators. She has translated more than 150 Quebec novels into English, including both of Kim Thúy's novels, Ru and Mãn, as well as books by such noted authors as Gaétan Soucy, Jacques Poulin, Anne Hébert, Michel Tremblay and Pascale Quiviger.
